Reason for bleeding noses in dogs

The most common reasons for nose bleeding include upper respiratory tract infection or trauma. Nose bleeding may occur if your pet is prone to accidents or has inflammation in its nasal tracts due to a lingering infection.

Other reasons for nose bleeding in dogs may include the following:

  • Coagulation problems
  • Certain cancers
  • Foreign body residing in the pet’s nose
  • Fungal infection
  • Having a tumor in the nose
  • Experiencing high blood pressure
  • Dental disease
  • Rat poison ingestion
  • Challenges with blood protein
  • Some kind of tick-disease

Consequences of the Problem

Losing too much blood can be detrimental to your pet’s health or ultimately lead to death.

  • When your pet’s nose bleeds, chances are that it’ll swallow some in the process. This occurrence may lead to melena (black stool) each time the dog defecates.
  • Another consequence of bleeding noses in dogs is hematemesis. This is a term that describes blood clots in the pet’s vomit.

These are some common effects you may observe after a period of epistaxis.

Solutions

Treating nose bleeding in dogs begins with identifying the cause. You’ll need to talk to a vet for the right treatment plan. Let’s now address some causes and their possible solutions.

Removal of Foreign Objects

In the case of a foreign object, the dog will have to be sedated. This is necessary to avoid too much pain while removing the object.

Antifungal medications

To treat fungal infections, the vet must carry out antifungal medications. If it’s a bacterial infection, the pet will be given antibiotics to fix the problem.

Yunnan Baiyao

The vet will perform a more extensive treatment to treat cases of growth, tick-borne diseases, or cancers. Such a treatment will require certain supplements, such as Yunnan Baiyao.

The ingredients in this supplement make it effective in reducing and stopping bleeding, increasing blood circulation, purifying toxins, and more.

How to use Yunnan Baiyao?

Yunnan Baiyao usually comes in capsule form, and here’s how to use it.

  • For internal bleeding, the pet will have to take the capsules orally. The dosage depends on the weight of the dog. For dogs weighing 10 lbs., it is 1 capsule a day. 10 to 30 lbs. will be 1 capsule twice daily, and so on.
  • For wounds, split the capsule in two and pour the powder on the affected area.

Conclusion

Knowing how to stop nose bleeding in dogs begins with identifying the cause of the issue. But in the meantime, you can try holding ice against the pet’s nose. If that fails, seek the assistance of a vet and find out the cause before commencing treatments.
