As more and more people are paying attention to environmental protection and individuality, renovating second-hand furniture or spray-painting wood chairs and tables by oneself has emerged as a popular trend. In this way, you can renew used items and customize a unique style according to your personal preferences. During this renovating experience, you can both enjoy the fun of DIY and refresh your home in a money-saving way.

So, how can you refresh used furniture? Do spray painting work? How can you spray paint a wooden chair? In this article, we’ll introduce spray painting as a cost-effective option and detail steps to spray paint furniture, helping you breathe new life into your home space.

Can you Spray Paint Furniture?

As an affordable way to refurbish your home, spray paint can cover imperfections of your furniture and give it a stylish and customized new look. But can you spray paint all your furniture? Actually, no.

Materials like wood, metal, and common ABS and PVC plastics work very well with paint. These materials have surfaces that easily adhere to paint. Spray painting on them makes your old furniture look brand new, being both aesthetically pleasing and practical. For example, a spray-painting wood chair with a brand-new bright color can immediately catch your guests’ attention and show your passion for life.

However, laminated boards, upholstered furniture, wicker furniture, and plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene are not suitable for spray painting. Painting on them may encounter issues such as poor adhesion or unsatisfactory results. If you insist on renovating furniture made of these materials, don’t worry; there is always a solution!

.  Laminate/veneer furniture

As laminate and veneer furniture, such as some IKEA products, features a smooth surface, spray paint on it is prone to peel off.

Solution: Thoroughly sand the surface with sandpaper to increase the adhesion of the paint. Apply a coat of high-adhesion primer, such as BIN shellac primer, for smooth surfaces and subsequent spray paint.

.  Upholstered furniture

Upholstered furniture made from fabric or leather is not suitable for direct painting, as it can harden the fabric and cause cracking or loss of soft touch.

Solution: Spray paint and refurbish the wooden or metal frames only; choose a special spray for the fabric part, or reupholster with new fabric or leather.

.   Rattan/wicker Furniture

Due to its unique woven structure and numerous gaps, rattan and wicker furniture may experience paint buildup, unevenness, and even peeling when directly spray painted.

Solution: Using brush-on acrylic paint can evenly cover the surface of the rattan and avoid paint buildup. Try the immersion stain method for a long-lasting and even color effect on rattan furniture.

.   Polyethylene/polypropylene plastic

For polyethylene and polypropylene plastic furniture, such as cheap plastic chairs, it is difficult for paint to adhere during spraying due to the non-polar surfaces.

Solution: Try flame treatment, which quickly alters the surface chemistry through high-temperature flames and enhances paint adhesion, or use a special plastic primer, but remember to conduct a test in a small area in advance to check the effectiveness.

How to Spray Paint Wood Chair?

For common furniture such as wooden chairs, spray paint can easily change the style to suit your personal preferences, making the perfect transformation from old to new.

Are you interested in spray painting wood chairs to give your home a new look? Here is a step-by-step guide for chair spray paint:

.   Clean & sanding

Clean the surface of the wooden chair to remove dust and old paint. Sand the surface with coarse sandpaper (80-120 grit) to remove burrs and scratches, then sand it smooth with fine sandpaper (220 grit), and finally wipe off the dust with a clean cloth.

.   Primer treatment (optional)

Apply a primer for better adhesion, and after it dries, gently sand it with fine sandpaper.

.   Paint spraying

Shake the spray paint can well, keep a distance of 15-20 centimeters, and spray evenly. Adopt the cross-spraying method (first horizontal and then vertical) to ensure even coverage.

.   Drying and protection

Place the spray-painting wood chair in a ventilated place and dry naturally for 24 hours. If necessary, apply a layer of varnish to increase the luster and protection.

.  Inspection & repair

Check the effect of spraying, if there is any leakage or unevenness, carry out partial repair.

There’s much more to spray paint than just giving a fresh look to your spray-painting wood chair. Whether it’s updating outdated cabinets or transforming those spray-painting, assembly yourself furniture into stylish pieces, spray paint can handle it all with ease.
