There was a time when songwriting felt inseparable from human experience. A melody carried memory. A lyric held intention. A chord progression reflected emotion that had been lived, not calculated. But as artificial intelligence moves deeper into creative territory, that assumption is starting to shift.

Today, AI systems can generate full songs, melody, lyrics, structure, and even vocal delivery, based on a few lines of input. What once required a studio, instruments, and a collaborative team can now begin with a prompt. The question is no longer whether machines can write songs. It’s whether they can understand music in a way that resembles how humans do.

The Difference Between Sound and Meaning

At its core, music is more than sound. It’s an interpretation. A lyric doesn’t just say something, it implies, suggests, leaves space for ambiguity. This is why platforms like Genius exist in the first place: to unpack meaning, context, and intention behind what we hear.

AI approaches music differently. It doesn’t experience heartbreak, nostalgia, or joy. Instead, it learns patterns. It analyzes massive datasets of existing music, identifying relationships between words, sounds, and structures. From there, it generates outputs that resemble meaningful expression.

This distinction matters. A machine can produce a convincing love song, but it doesn’t feel love. And yet, when listeners hear the result, they may still connect with it emotionally. In that sense, meaning doesn’t always come from the creator, it emerges in the listener.

The Rise of AI Songwriting Platforms

The rapid development of AI music tools has made this conversation more than theoretical. ElevenLabs is expanding beyond voice synthesis into full-scale music creation, with developments such as ElevenMusic allowing users to generate complete songs from natural language prompts. This isn’t just about automation. It’s about accessibility. Someone with no formal musical training can now describe an idea, “a melancholic indie track with soft vocals and ambient textures”, and receive a structured composition in return.

That changes who gets to create. It lowers the barrier to entry and expands the definition of what a “songwriter” can be. But it also raises questions about authorship. If the idea comes from a human, the structure from an algorithm, and the voice from a model trained on existing performances, who is the artist?

Creativity as Direction, Not Execution

One of the most interesting shifts happening right now is the separation of creative intent from technical execution. Traditionally, making music required both. You needed the idea and the ability to bring it to life.

AI tools are beginning to decouple those roles. The creator becomes a director, someone who guides the system, shapes the output, and refines the result. The machine handles the mechanics.

For some, this is empowering. It allows more people to participate in music creation. For others, it raises concerns about homogenization. If many systems are trained on similar datasets, will the music they generate begin to sound the same?

The answer may depend on how these tools are used. Just as digital audio workstations didn’t eliminate creativity but changed how it was expressed, AI may become another layer in the process rather than a replacement for it.

Remixing Meaning in Real Time

Music has always evolved through reinterpretation. Sampling, remixing, and collaboration are built into its DNA. AI accelerates this process by making transformation instant and accessible.

With AI, a song is no longer a fixed object. It can be reworked, restyled, and reinterpreted continuously. A listener can become a co-creator, reshaping a track to match their own perspective.

This aligns closely with how audiences already engage with music. On Genius, for example, fans annotate lyrics, debate interpretations, and build layers of meaning around a song. AI extends that interaction into the creative domain itself.

But this fluidity also complicates ownership. If a song can be endlessly modified, where does the original end and the derivative begin?

The Question of Authenticity

Perhaps the most debated aspect of AI-generated music is authenticity. Listeners often value music not just for how it sounds, but for the story behind it. Knowing who wrote a song, and why, can shape how it is received.

AI challenges that relationship. If a song is generated by a system, does it carry the same weight? Or does authenticity come from how the music is experienced rather than how it was made?

There is no single answer. Some listeners may reject AI-generated music as inauthentic. Others may embrace it as a new form of creativity. Over time, the distinction may become less important, especially as AI tools are integrated into traditional workflows.

Ethics, Data, and the Future of Creation

Behind the creative possibilities lies a complex ethical landscape. AI systems are trained on existing music, which raises questions about licensing, attribution, and compensation.

Some platforms are addressing this by using licensed datasets and working with rights holders to ensure responsible development. ElevenLabs, for instance, has emphasized building its music capabilities on properly licensed material, aiming to support both innovation and creator rights.

This is an important step. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the global music ecosystem depends on fair compensation and sustainable practices. As AI becomes part of that ecosystem, it will need to operate within those same principles.

Can Machines Truly Understand Music?

So, can machines understand music like humans do?

In a technical sense, they understand structure, pattern, and probability at a level that is often beyond human capability. They can analyze millions of songs, identify trends, and generate outputs that align with established musical logic.

But understanding, in the human sense, is something different. It involves context, memory, emotion, and lived experience. These are not things AI possesses.

And yet, music itself has always been a bridge between intention and interpretation. A song doesn’t need to be fully understood by its creator to resonate with a listener. In that space between creation and perception, AI-generated music can still find meaning.

A New Kind of Collaboration

Rather than replacing human creativity, AI is introducing a new kind of collaboration. It is a tool, a partner, and in some cases, a co-author. It expands what is possible while also challenging what we value in art.

For platforms like Genius, where music is explored, analyzed, and debated, this shift opens new territory. Songs created with AI will still carry meaning, but that meaning may come from different places.

As AI continues to evolve, the question may not be whether machines understand music like humans do. It may be whether our definition of understanding is evolving alongside the tools we use to create.
