Knee pain is a common complaint that, if left unchecked, can lead to serious health issues. Many people search for treatments but may struggle to find lasting relief.

This article explores the main causes of knee pain and highlights three effective treatment options: genicular artery embolization or GAE knee procedure, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications.

What Causes Knee Pain?

Several factors can contribute to knee pain, including:

Overuse

Repetitive activities like sports, exercise, or physical labor can place excessive strain on the knee joint. Constant motions, such as jumping or kneeling, can lead to pain over time by wearing down cartilage and other joint structures.

Overuse can also increase the risk of developing conditions like tendinitis or bursitis.

Arthritis

Knee arthritis, a common form of joint inflammation, causes pain, swelling, and stiffness that can worsen with age. Over time, this inflammation can damage cartilage, leading to joint deformity and reduced mobility.

People with arthritis may experience flare-ups, especially during periods of inactivity or after physical exertion.

Injuries

Knee injuries can happen during sports, accidents, or other physical activities. Damage to the meniscus, ligaments, or cartilage can result in persistent pain, swelling, and instability. In severe cases, untreated injuries may cause long-term complications like chronic joint weakness or early-onset arthritis.

Proper diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent further damage.

Effective Treatments for Knee Pain

If you are experiencing knee pain, there are three primary treatment options to consider:

Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) Procedure

This minimally invasive procedure targets knee pain caused by arthritis without requiring traditional surgery. The GAE method reduces pain and inflammation by limiting blood flow to inflamed areas of the knee joint, improving both pain levels and joint function.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can improve knee joint function and reduce pain through customized exercises. A skilled physical therapist can create a program to strengthen muscles around the knee, correct imbalances, and enhance mobility.

Lifestyle Modifications

Making lifestyle changes can help manage and prevent knee pain, especially for those with arthritis. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces strain on the knee joints and lowers the risk of further injury.

Post-Surgery Care for Knee Pain

For those who undergo knee surgery, proper post-operative care is essential for recovery and long-term pain management. Here are some key strategies:

Rest and Elevation

Allow your body time to heal by getting adequate rest, especially in the first few weeks after surgery. Avoid putting unnecessary weight on your knee, as this can delay recovery. Elevating your leg above heart level promotes better circulation, reduces fluid buildup, and helps minimize swelling and discomfort.

Ice Therapy

Applying ice to the surgical site helps reduce both pain and inflammation by constricting blood vessels. Use an ice pack for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, particularly during the initial recovery phase. Be sure to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin, which can cause frostbite.

Medication Management

Your healthcare provider may prescribe anti-inflammatory medications or pain relievers to control post-surgical pain. It’s important to follow the prescribed dosage and timing carefully to avoid side effects or dependency. Communicate with your doctor if the medication is not effectively managing your pain or if you experience any adverse reactions.

Final Thoughts

Knee pain can result from various factors, including overuse, arthritis, and injuries. Fortunately, treatments such as GAE, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes can provide significant relief and improve mobility.

By understanding the causes of knee pain and exploring suitable treatments, individuals can take proactive steps toward maintaining healthier knees and a better quality of life.
