A savings account is meant to make fund management simple and convenient. It helps you receive funds, make payments, and keep your savings totally secure. However, many tend to notice minor deductions in their savings account without always understanding why they happen.

These are generally service charges linked to certain account activities/requirements. While such charges are common, most of them can be avoided with a little awareness. Whether you manage a standard savings account or a savings account online, being aware of such charges can help you keep more of your money where it belongs.

Here are some common savings account charges and practical ways to avoid them.

1. Minimum balance charges

One of the common charges associated with a savings account arises when the required minimum balance is not maintained. Most savings accounts require you to keep a certain amount in the account at all times or as an average monthly balance. If the balance falls below this particular limit, a penalty may be applied.

To avoid this charge, it helps to keep track of the required balance and maintain a small buffer above it. Setting reminders or checking your account regularly using the savings account online platform can ensure that the balance does not drop below the required level.

2. ATM transaction charges

While ATM withdrawals are convenient, surpassing the allowed number of free transactions might result in additional charges. Such charges generally apply once the free monthly limit is crossed, particularly when withdrawing from ATMs outside the network of the bank account.

A simple way to avoid this is by simply planning withdrawals more carefully. In place of making several minor withdrawals, you can limit the number of transactions by withdrawing the required amount in fewer visits. Digital payments and online transfers can even reduce the need for frequent ATM usage.

3. Debit card annual fees

A few savings account holders might notice an annual fee associated with their debit card. This fee covers the maintenance and services associated with the debit card. While the amount might appear small, it is still a recurring charge that many tend to overlook.

To avoid unnecessary expenses, it helps to review the card features provided with your account. In a few scenarios, certain account types might offer cards with lower or no annual fees. Keeping track of such details when opening or managing a savings account online can enable you to select the option that suits you best.

4. Charges for additional services

Certain services linked to a savings account, i.e., requesting physical statements, cheque books, or specific account services might come with a fee after a certain limit. Such charges are applied when the number of requests exceeds the free allowance.

A practical way to avoid such charges is by using digital alternatives whenever possible. For instance, account statements can be downloaded online, which reduces the need for printed copies. Using online services can help minimise these extra costs.

5. Charges for failed or returned transactions

Sometimes a transaction may fail due to insufficient funds or incorrect payment details. In certain cases, this may lead to charges being applied to the savings account. These situations often occur during automated payments or cheque processing.

To prevent this, it is helpful to maintain enough balance before scheduling payments or issuing cheques. Double-checking transaction details and keeping track of upcoming payments can also reduce the chances of failed transactions.

Ending Note

Small charges may seem insignificant at first, but over time, they can reduce your savings. The good news is that most of these charges are easy to avoid with little awareness and regular monitoring.

By keeping track of account requirements and using the services available on the savings account online platform, you can manage your finances more efficiently. A well-managed savings account should support your financial habits and not surprise you with avoidable deductions.
