A widely cited consumer research report says Amazon Prime crossed a major U.S. milestone, reaching an estimated 101 million subscribers at the end of 2018. The figure, attributed to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners and reported by Fortune on January 17, 2019, marked a jump from a little more than 90 million U.S. subscribers a year earlier (Amazon Prime Video Subscriber).

The 101 million figure is important because it shows how quickly Prime became central to Amazon’s U.S. retail strategy. Prime members were also estimated to spend substantially more on Amazon than non-members, reinforcing the program’s role as both a loyalty engine and a sales driver.

Context for Amazon Prime members in 2023

For readers comparing the older 101 million estimate with Amazon Prime members 2023 data, later CIRP estimates show the program continued to expand. CIRP estimated that 176 million U.S. Amazon customers had access to Prime in the December 2023 quarter, rising to 194 million in the December 2024 quarter. CIRP notes that its figures count individual Amazon shoppers who use Prime, not only households that pay for a Prime membership.

Amazon does not regularly disclose a standalone U.S. Prime member count, which is why analyst and research-firm estimates are closely watched by retailers, brands, advertisers, and investors. The growth trajectory suggests that Prime has remained a major force in U.S. e-commerce even as the program has expanded beyond two-day shipping.

Why the membership base matters

A large Prime audience gives Amazon a built-in base for shopping events, streaming launches, grocery offers, and advertising products. It also helps explain why Amazon Prime deals continue to receive heavy attention during major retail moments such as Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday.

Amazon said customers worldwide purchased more than 1 billion items during its 2023 Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday event, and that U.S. customers ordered more than 500 million items from independent sellers during the period. The company also said millions of customers signed up for Prime memberships during that event.

Delivery speed has become another key part of the Prime story. In 2023, Amazon said it delivered more than 7 billion units to Prime members globally the same day or next day, including more than 4 billion in the U.S.

Prime membership benefits keep broadening

Today, Prime membership benefits extend well beyond shipping. Amazon says U.S. members have access to free Prime shipping on more than 300 million items, with tens of millions of popular items eligible for Same-Day or One-Day Delivery.

The program also includes entertainment and savings features such as Prime Video, Amazon Music access, early access to Lightning Deals, grocery-related offers, fuel savings at participating stations, prescription-related programs, and discounted membership options for eligible customers.

The bottom line

The reported 101 million U.S. Prime member milestone was a snapshot of Amazon’s rapid membership growth at the end of 2018, not the latest available estimate. By 2023, outside estimates indicated a much larger U.S. Prime user base, underscoring how deeply the membership program is embedded in American online shopping behavior.
