If you make a mistake while being arrested, it could make the situation much worse. I’m sure you’ll have enough common sense to avoid the obvious ones. For example, it’s silly to start fighting with police officers.

It will look bad if you resist arrest, but other mistakes are a little easier to make. Let’s look at some golden rules you must follow when being arrested, so you won’t end up in jail even if you’re not guilty.

1. Don’t Speak To Police Officers

Don’t speak to any police officers when you’re being arrested. Keep your mouth shut when you’re with the booking officer. Stay silent when a detective tries to interview you. The police only want to send you to jail.

They don’t decide whether or not you’re guilty. Once you start proclaiming your innocence, they won’t drive you home. If you live in Toronto, don’t say anything until you’ve talked to a Brampton criminal defence lawyer.

2. Don’t Let Anyone Into Your Home

Once police officers arrive at your home, don’t step outside no matter what they say. Tell them you’re comfortable where you are. If anyone asks to enter your home, tell them you don’t want them stepping inside without a warrant.

When the police have a right to enter your home, it won’t matter whether or not you give them permission. It’s also crucial to stop them from searching your car unless they have a legal right to do so.

3. Always Stay Outside Your Home

If caught close to your home in Toronto, ask to speak to a criminal lawyer in Scarborough. Don’t go into your home under any circumstances. Police officers will ask if they can take you inside, but it’s a cunning trick.

If you say yes, you’re giving them permission to enter. Once they step foot inside your home, they’ll be able to rip it apart. If it’s really cold outside, you’ll need to suffer until you’re put into the police car.

4. Keep Your Eyes Facing Forwards

Sometimes police officers will have a warrant when they show up at your home. If you have something to hide, you’ll probably be scared they will find it. Don’t give them any help while they’re searching, which is easy to do accidentally.

If you keep looking at something every few seconds, they’ll know something is wrong. Police are trained to pay close attention to suspects, so they’ll know you won’t be able to resist subconsciously staring at anything illegal.

5. You Shouldn’t Start Sprinting

It’s tempting to start sprinting as soon as you see a police officer, but you must resist the temptation. If you run away, they’ll be able to say you resisted arrest, even if you don’t attack or threaten anyone.

It’s also more likely you’ll go to prison if you run away. Think about what the jury will assume while being told what happened. If someone runs away, there is a good chance it’s because they’re guilty.

Stay Quiet And Do Nothing

Once arrested, it’s best to stay quiet and do nothing. And don’t forget, almost everything the police say is a lie.
