A temporary business relocation… It sounds pretty simple on paper, right? Your employer needs you somewhere else for a few weeks or months. You pay up a suitcase, find a place to stay, and carry on working.

In reality, it feels surprisingly strange.

You’re living in an unfamiliar place. You’re sleeping in a different bed. You’re trying to work out where to buy groceries. And you’re eating dinner along more often than you’d like to. Even if the relocation is temporary – and even if you’re really excited about the opportunity – it takes a while to feel settled.

The good news, you don’t have to wait for the unfamiliar to become familiar on its own. A few small habits make a temporary home feel much more comfortable.

Keep reading on to learn how to do that.

1. Create a Space That Feels Like Yours

The first few days in temporary accommodation feels a bit like you’re staying in someone else’s space – and that’s weird. Your suitcase is still half-packed. Your toiletries are scattered around the bathroom. You don’t quite know where anything belongs.

So, unpack properly.

It sounds simple. However, living out of a suitcase makes even a short stay feel temporary. In the worst possible way. Put your clothes away. Arrange your toiletries. Make the space work for your everyday life.

It also helps to bring a few familiar things from home. Pretty obvious, right? You don’t need to recreate your entire living room, though. A favorite book, photographs, or even your usual coffee mug will make a major difference.

Choosing the right accommodation matters as well. Luxury furnished rentals for Toronto visitors, for example, provides more of a home-like setup than a standard hotel room. Having separate areas to cook, relax, sleep, and work makes everyday life feel less like an extended business trip.

2. Build a Routine – Even a Loose One

When everything around you is unfamiliar, a routine provides a little bit of stability.

You don’t need to schedule every minute of every day. In fact, trying to do that will only make relocation feel like another work assignment. And you don’t need that extra pressure.

Just find a few things you can do consistently.

Maybe you take a walk before work each morning. Perhaps you visit the same coffee shop for an hour on Fridays. You might even cook yourself a proper meal a few nights a week – and that’s preferable over takeout every evening. Small routines like these give your days a rhythm and help your new surroundings feel less temporary.

Try to get out and explore. Find the local grocery store. Walk around a nearby park. Look for somewhere you genuinely enjoy spending time. You don’t have to become an expert on the city. Just knowing your way around the immediate area will help.

3. Stay Connected to Home

One of the hardest parts of a temporary relocation is the feeling that life is happening somewhere else without you.

Your family and friends are still following their usual routines. All the while, you’re trying to build a new one from scratch. It’s easy to get busy with work and tell yourself you’ll call someone tomorrow – but then suddenly, two weeks have passed.

Try to stay in touch.

That doesn’t mean you need to spend every evening on a video call. There are little ways to help you feel connected to the people you miss and care about. A quick message. A regular phone call. Sharing a photo from your day. Those are enough.

At the same time, try not to spend every free moment wishing you were back home. You’re only there temporarily, so give yourself the time to enjoy where you are, too.

To conclude, you’ll feel odd for the first few days of a business relocation. That’s normal. But if you take the steps above, you’ll find yourself becoming more comfortable.
