The starting gun for the EDP Porto Marathon will fire at 8:00 a.m. on November 3rd, kicking off one of the most anticipated races of the year. Last year’s event attracted over 15,000 runners from 72 different countries, and this year aims to break that record with even more participants and nations represented. While fall marathons can be daunting due to unpredictable weather, Porto’s mild Mediterranean climate makes this race an exception. The forecast predicts ideal running conditions, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 19 degrees Celsius—a perfect setup for both racing and exploring the city afterward.
Competitions that will take place
The EDP Porto Marathon offers a race for every level of runner, with three events taking place on the same day. The Fun Race (6 km / 3.7 miles) is designed for beginners and casual runners. The Family Race (10 km / 6.2 miles) is a scenic route featuring stunning coastal views. The Marathon (42.195 km / 26.2 miles) is the main event, bringing together over 6,300 runners for the full marathon challenge.
Where does the Marathon of Porto pass through?
The Porto Marathon is renowned for its scenic route. Although it doesn’t pass through the city centre, runners get to enjoy some of the most stunning views and iconic landmarks Porto has to offer.
● The Marathon of Porto begins at Castelo do Queijo and loops around Porto’s City Park, the largest park in Portugal. Runners will pass notable landmarks like The Anemone (She Changes), cross the Leça Bridge, and run along the beach up to Leça Lighthouse before heading back toward the city. The route then continues past St. Joao Baptista Fortress and Felgueiras Lighthouse, moves toward Arrabida Bridge, passes the Alfandega do Porto, and crosses three iconic bridges: Luis I, Infante, and Maria Pia. After crossing the São João Bridge, runners will follow the scenic Douro River back to the finish line.
● The Family Race starts at Castelo do Queijo, this course follows the coastline, offering spectacular ocean views before turning back at Sao Miguel o Anjo Lighthouse and finishing at the same point.
● The Fun Race also starts at Castelo do Queijo, this route takes runners through Porto’s City Park, sharing part of the marathon’s initial track before concluding at the same finish line as the marathon.
What do you get for running the EDP Porto Marathon?
If you register for any of the races in the EDP Porto Marathon, you’ll have access to the Expo Maratona, held at the Alfandega do Porto in the days leading up to the race. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to meet fellow runners, soak in the vibrant atmosphere, pick up your race kit, and gather additional information about the event. The Expo Maratona will also host a Pasta Party on November 2nd from 12:00 to 16:00, where participants can load up on carbohydrates before race day. Later, at around 17:00, you can enjoy a Fado concert (the traditional folk music from Lisbon’s old neighbourhoods) to get you in the mood for the big day.
After finishing the race, you’ll receive a medal, which can be engraved with your name and time (if purchased at the Expo Maratona or on race day). For those aiming for victory, the prize money is equal for both men and women: 1st place receives €5,000, 2nd place €3,500, 3rd place €3,000, 4th place €2,000, and 5th place €1,000. Additionally, if you set a new Porto Marathon record, you’ll earn an extra €3,000.
