Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey finished No. 1 at the domestic box office for July 17–19, 2026, earning $123.5 million across 3,919 theaters. That weekend has already passed: the film’s opening is now a reported result, rather than a forecast of what it might earn through July 19. Box Office Mojo’s final figures confirm the Universal Pictures release led the market.
How much did The Odyssey earn on opening weekend?
The Odyssey opening weekend generated $123,502,900 domestically, according to Box Office Mojo. Initial Sunday reporting put the U.S. and Canada debut at an estimated $124.5 million, explaining why earlier coverage carries a slightly higher figure. The final domestic total should be distinguished from those preliminary estimates when comparing Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey box office performance with other releases.
The opening also marked Nolan’s strongest domestic debut since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, according to The Associated Press. Its initial worldwide launch estimate reached $264.1 million, including $139.6 million overseas. Those figures established a substantial international audience alongside the North American turnout.
IMAX screenings powered the theatrical launch
Premium presentation was a major part of the opening story. IMAX reported approximately $52 million worldwide from the film’s debut, representing about 20% of its global opening. In North America, IMAX screenings contributed $29.6 million across 444 screens, according to the company’s July 20 announcement.
The format’s contribution extended beyond its overall ticket sales:
- Limited film locations delivered substantial revenue: The 41 IMAX 70mm locations worldwide generated $6.3 million during opening weekend.
- Advance demand was unusually strong: IMAX reported $50 million in presales, its highest total at the time.
- The production supported the format: IMAX described The Odyssey as the first theatrical feature filmed entirely with IMAX 70mm film cameras.
U.S. exhibitors also reported benefits beyond the headline gross. Regal said the film generated $22.9 million at its theaters during opening weekend, with more than half of ticket sales coming from premium auditoriums. The chain added 72 overnight screenings to meet demand and reported its highest weekly concession sales of 2026 to that point.
The opening led into a sustained box office run
The debut was not the film’s only weekend at the top. Box Office Mojo records another No. 1 finish for July 24–26, when The Odyssey earned $90 million domestically, a decline of 27.1%. That second weekend brought its cumulative domestic earnings to $289.4 million.
The next confirmed milestone for U.S. audiences is home viewing. Universal announced on October 13 that the film had surpassed $1.7 billion worldwide and would arrive on digital platforms, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on November 17, 2026. The release includes behind-the-scenes material overseen by Nolan, extending the film’s availability beyond its theatrical engagement.
