At times, you may notice a few pounds dropping off the scale and wonder what could be causing this unexpected change. While it’s true that intentional weight loss involves a calculated approach regarding diet and exercise, involuntary weight loss isn’t always so straight forward. Two common triggers of this are fatigue and fever. But, does fever cause weight loss or more specifically, does fever burn calories? Let’s take a deep look into it.

Fatigue and Weight Loss

While fatigue isn’t directly linked to weight loss, the behaviors stemming from it certainly are. Here’s how:

  • Reducing Physical Activity: When you’re fatigued, the likelihood of engaging in regular physical activity significantly reduces, leading to muscle loss, which can cause weight loss.
  • Impacting Appetite: Fatigue can also impact your eating habits. It may leave you with little or no appetite at all, resulting in a reduced calorie intake, thus aiding in weight loss.

Fever and Weight Loss

Unlike fatigue, fever has a more direct relationship with weight loss. Let’s see how:

  1. Increased Metabolic Activity: With fever, your body’s metabolic rate increases as it tries to fight off the infection. This heightened metabolic activity often leads to weight loss.
  2. Loss of Appetite & Dehydration: High fever often causes loss of appetite and dehydration which can lead to weight loss as well.

FatigueMay lead to weight loss by affecting physical activity and eating habits
FeverTypically contributes to weight loss due to increased metabolic activity, loss of appetite and dehydration

In addition to the above, when you experience fever, it’s not uncommon to notice changes in your gut health. This is primarily due to the churn of indigestion and fever.

Indigestion and fever can create a cascade of issues that affect your appetite and overall wellness. Fever causes your body to burn more calories while fighting off an infection, while indigestion prevents your body from properly absorbing nutrients from the food you eat. When combined, these factors can lead to unintentional weight loss and other health concerns.

Here are some ways in which indigestion and fever can adversely affect your gut health:

•         Disrupted digestion:

Prolonged fever can impact the functioning of your digestive system, leading to indigestion.

•         Reduced nutrient absorption:

Indigestion interferes with your body’s ability to properly absorb nutrients from the food you consume.

•         Altered gut microbiota:

Chronic fatigue and fever can cause changes in the gut microbiota, negatively impacting digestion and nutrient absorption.

Ultimately, if these conditions persist, it could lead to unintentional weight loss and overall health degradation.

While neither fatigue nor fever directly cause weight loss, changes in your physical activity, appetite, and metabolic activity due to these conditions can often lead to weight changes.  With increased metabolism, fever causes weight loss sometimes. But, if you’re experiencing unexplained weight loss along with fatigue or fever, it’s important to seek medical advice to determine the root cause and ensure your health is not at risk.
