Vitamins, herbal extracts, protein powders, probiotics – many dietary supplements today promise to support our well-being and fill nutritional gaps. However, their boom in popularity can make it challenging to discern which supplements are truly high-quality and effective from amongst the many in the marketplace. Here are some factors to look out for so you confidently choose supplements that deliver on their promises.

1. Look for Third-Party Testing to Reaffirm Product Quality

Reputable supplement manufacturers should voluntarily submit their products to independent third-party organizations such as NSF International, USP, and ConsumerLab.com, for testing. These organizations can verify the quality, purity, and potency of supplements, ensuring that you get what you pay for. Look for their seals of approval on product labels to affirm the quality of the supplements.

2. Prioritize Organic Certification

Whenever possible, choose supplements that are certified organic and/or use certified organic ingredients. This certification ensures that the ingredients are grown without the use of harmful pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

3. Read Labels Carefully

Don’t be fooled by flashy packaging or marketing claims. Take the time to read the supplement facts label carefully. Pay attention to:

  • Ingredients: Look for recognizable ingredients and avoid products with fillers, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.
  • Dosage: Ensure the dosage is appropriate for your needs and consult with your doctor if you have any concerns.
  • Allergens and Dietary Requirements: Check for potential allergens, especially if you have sensitivities or allergies. If you have any other dietary requirements, check to see if the supplement uses appropriate ingredients or is certified by a relevant organization.

4. Buy From Reputable Brands

Opt for supplements from well-established brands with a strong reputation for quality and transparency. Research the company’s manufacturing practices and commitment to safety and efficacy.

5. Consider Bioavailability

Bioavailability refers to how well your body can absorb a nutrient and utilize a nutrient. Some forms of nutrients are more bioavailable than others. For example, magnesium glycinate is generally better absorbed than magnesium oxide, making the former less likely to have a laxative effect and other gastrointestinal side effects. Do your research to choose the most bioavailable forms of the nutrients you need.

6. Avoid Mega-Doses

More is not always better when it comes to supplements. In fact, taking mega-doses of certain vitamins and minerals in excess can be harmful. Stick to the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) unless otherwise advised by a trusted healthcare professional.

7. Be Wary of Misleading Claims

Be skeptical of supplements that promise miraculous results or quick fixes. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Look for products that are backed by scientific evidence and avoid those that make unsubstantiated claims.

8. Consult a Healthcare Professional

If you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications, it’s best to consult with your doctor before adding any supplements to your daily routine. They can help you determine which supplements are appropriate for your individual needs and ensure they won’t interact with your medications.
