Spain hasn’t always had the best reputation for mobile connectivity. That’s changed now, but it’s not comparable, or it hasn’t been comparable, to other countries in Europe. And if you read the headline, Movistar’s 250 Mbps 5G Speeds, you might think that’s good. But it isn’t.

Below, we’ll explore how Movistar’s 250 Mbps 5G speeds compare to the rest of Europe.

A Closer Look at Movistar’s Achievements

Movistar is a network regulated in Spain, and it’s one of the most popular. Lately, it hasn’t just set a benchmark in Spain. It has redefined the standards of network performance with its unparalleled 5G speeds. Achieving an average download speed of 46.0 Mbps across all networks, and an astonishing 250.8 Mbps in 5G, Movistar has emerged as the frontrunner in the 5G race.

This achievement is not just a testament to the company’s technological achievements but also to its commitment to providing a robust digital experience to its users.

Comparison Against Other European Countries

5G is still in its infancy. Sometimes, it’s not always about connection speeds. It’s about the availability of the connection. Spain’s connection availability was once terrible, but it has now improved massively. According to The Spain Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, 87% of people in Spain had access to 5G in 2022. Still, the speeds aren’t always great. Here’s how they compare to other countries in Europe based on download speeds:

  • Sweden – almost 334 Mbps
  • Bulgaria – over 300 Mbps
  • Norway – over 300 Mbps
  • UK- between 150 – 200 Mbps (sometimes up to 1GB)
  • France – 221.1 Mbps

So actually, although Spain was once a little behind the times, the download speeds are comparable to the rest of Europe. What you can access will depend on your location in Spain.

Based on the numbers, we’d say Spain is somewhere in the middle. It’s not the best, but it’s beating countries like the UK, where you’d think it’d be quicker.

And it even beats Orange and Yogio – two of Movistar’s competitors. Orange and Yoigo are statistically tied with scores of 135 Mbps and 124.9 Mbps.

The Pursuit of Ultra-Fast Internet

Across Europe, the push for faster internet is not just about speed. It’s about shaping a future that’s digitally connected and technologically advanced. And we are now more digitally connected than ever. Countries like Switzerland, France, and Germany are heavily investing in their digital infrastructure. They aim to provide their citizens with connectivity that’s not just fast but also reliable and pervasive.

In this context, Movistar’s 5G speeds represent a significant stride towards achieving digital excellence. It’s contributing to the broader European goal of creating a seamlessly connected continent.

5G Availability

While speed is a crucial factor, the availability of 5G services is equally important in assessing a country’s digital prowess. In this regard, Spain stands out, with network operators like Movistar ensuring that a significant portion of the population has access to 5G services.

This commitment to expanding 5G coverage is a testament to the country’s dedication to fostering a digitally inclusive society, where every individual has access to the benefits of ultra-fast internet.

This widespread availability is about laying the foundation for future innovations and economic growth. By ensuring that 5G services reach every corner of the nation, Spain is positioning itself as a leader in the digital age, ready to leverage the full potential of this groundbreaking technology for societal advancement and improved quality of life for its citizens.

Movistar’s 250 Mbps 5G speeds are excellent. They’re a significant contribution to Europe’s collective journey toward a digitally empowered future. As network operators across the continent continue to innovate and compete, the ultimate beneficiaries are the European citizens.
