Car safety is more than just defensive driving and being aware of road conditions all the time. Before turning the key or ignition, it pays to check these 6 things as well.

Fuel Level

Do a quick scan of your car’s fuel levels. Do you have enough to make the trip and back again? When you’re low, it might be better to get a refuel than risk it later.

Tire Check

Complete an external vehicle scan by walking around the car. See if all four tires are okay and if they’re flat and don’t have any unusual bulges. Use a device to measure tire pressure and top up with a manual or electric pump.

Test the Lights

Get inside the car and see if all the lights are working. Include the turn signals, the hazard lights, and the reverse lights. Back up to a wall so you can see if the brake lights are working as well.

Wear Your Seatbelt

Make sure you and your passengers’ seatbelts are fastened and secure, as it can make a huge difference. Car accidents can result in whiplash and severe injuries. In the event this happens, it’s best to have a contact number of a reputable car accident lawyer for legal advice.

Side and Rearview Mirrors

You should be able to see all outside angles when you’re driving. Adjust them so you can clearly see the rear and minimize blind spots.

Self-Readiness

Lastly, you can conduct a self-assessment to see if you can drive. Sleep and fatigue can lead to an accident, so get some rest beforehand. Drivers who are under emotional distress should not drive, as it can affect their judgment and impair some of their senses. If unsure, have someone else drive, book a cab, or open a ridesharing app.
