3. Electrolyte

During charging, lithium ions leave the positive electrode (e.g. lithium cobalt oxide) and reach the negative electrode (e.g. graphite) via electrolyte while passing through the separator. Electrons from the external circuit come to the anode (negative electrode), which supplies the required charge to settle incoming lithium ions. During this process, lithium ions are intercalated on the negative electrode.

During discharging, lithium ions leave the anode. These pass through the separator via electrolyte to reach the cathode to combine with its materials. Electrons also leave the anode and go to the device, consuming the battery’s power.
