You’ve just bought your new home, and are very excited about decorating. You have many ideas, but no real plan, and don’t want to end up with a jumble of styles and themes, leading to an uncoordinated look. So, because you’re in Melbourne, you look for the plantation shutters Melbourne locals prefer. You also start looking at the colours and themes that suit your personality and family.

But then you get a bit stuck. Don’t worry, we’ve got just the tips to help you in this article.

Decide on the Personality of Your Décor

You and your family have a unique personality—as individuals, and as a family, how you interact will reflect a particular style or theme. You may be more formal and structured, or you could be more open and spontaneous. Your house needs to reflect that in order to suit your lifestyle.

Here are some examples:

  • You can get modernist looks, with clean lines and monochromatic, muted neutrals. There is no clutter or play area, but spaces where you can entertain guests—so you’ll keep it all clean and neat.
  • Try the cottagey look, where you opt for a few more colours, with darker hues in places, and lots of strong colour without going bold. All the colours will have gray tones.
  • If you’re a person who is a bit bohemian, then reflect that in your style. To avoid an overwhelming amount of décor, simply add touches which describe bohemian.

In all of this keep in mind the odd one out, whose personality is not quite the same as the rest of the family’s. Give them space to be themselves, and a room where they can decorate using their own personality, even if it doesn’t fit the rest of the house.

Select a Colour Scheme

Your colour scheme is the next thing on your list. Choose a colour range that’s in keeping with your theme and style. So, you could choose a neutral set of colours to reflect a light, modern style. Or you could use grey, stronger tones for that cottage theme.

You may opt for a home which reflects nature, and which has many sandy, brown, green and blue themes.

Style Your Floors

Your floors are more important than you would imagine. Firstly, they radiate coolness or warmth depending on the material you choose for under your feet. Secondly, the colours change the ambience of the room to a more coldly formal style, or a relaxed, warm vibe.

For flooring, always take into account the weather. If you’re in a very cold area, then tiles without underfloor heating aren’t going to be very practical or healthy. But if you live in a very warm climate, then tiles are going to be exceedingly welcome for those hot summer days.

Bear in mind that carpets bring cosiness, stylishness, or formality, depending on the type and style. Even if you don’t add them for warmth, you can add them for interest.

Make Your Walls Interesting

Your walls give you the opportunity to bring a lot of interesting features into the rooms. You can add paint or eye-catching wallpaper. Experts often add a feature wall, where you paint it a deeper colour than the rest of the walls. Then add items that fit with your them, whether it be paintings, wood décor, murals or greenery.

Dress Your Windows

When it comes to dressing your windows, look for modern curtains Melbourne residents use to keep out the heat AND prying eye. You could add shutters, or blinds in a style that fits with your theme, ensuring cohesion across the room.

Be sure to obtain curtains that will last a long time. It’s worth spending the extra money because they’ll take a beating from the hot Australian sun. To continue your theme, add theme-based tiebacks or hooks that will draw your curtains back in an elegant manner.

Add some net curtains for privacy, and allow full expression of your personality in the bedrooms. Because curtains take up so much wall space it’s an easy way to communicate the theme or your personality with just one purchase.

Add Some Plants

Plants lift the atmosphere of any room. They bring nature into your home, and provide the oxygen you need for living well. The greenness is said to bring a sense of peace, too.

Make sure that you put plants at every level, using hanging ferns or plants in pots—a great way to create dimension in a room without adding too much clutter or using a lot of floor space.

Conclusion

There is a lot to be said about decorating your own home. It’s exciting, challenging, and there are many factors to consider. It’s definitely worth the effort in the long run, and you will get great satisfaction out of seeing the work of your hands.

If you do have the funds, why not find an interior decorator to help you coordinate your home’s look? The professional advice can help you perfect the look you started imagining while reading this article.
