All-Round Wig Wearing Skills for Travel

Whether you rely on wigs full time or just for special occasions, having the right skills can make a difference when you’re on the go. As a frequent traveler who appreciates the convenience of wearing wigs, here are my best tips for feeling confident while traveling.

The Right Wig Styles

When it comes to choosing wigs for travel, diversity is key. I always pack at least two wigs with different styles that suit my plans.

In my carry-on, I always have my go-to synthetic wig in a straight honey blonde style with a shoulder-length cut. It’s perfect for meetings and dinners.

On the other hand, I also bring a fun curly wig with thick crimped waves for lazy sightseeing days and beach vacations. This allows my natural hair to take a break from heat styling.

To blend in with foreign cities, I rely on a pageboy cut wig with a textured style that feels professional yet effortlessly stylish. The small braids tucked behind my ears keep it secure all day.

Proper Preparations

I always carry a well-stocked “wig first aid kit” in my carry-on for quick fixes between destinations. It includes extra elastic bands, bobby pins, a folding comb, texturizing spray, and small silicone grippers to keep my wig styles secure.

Instead of cramming my wigs into rigid plastic cases, I pack them in mesh laundry bags. This allows for optimal air circulation and prevents musty smells during transit.

While packing, I gently roll each wig around a collapsible headform to maintain their natural shape and curl retention during travel.

Strategies for Security & Customs

To avoid any issues at security, I always inform TSA agents that I’m wearing small knotless braids wigs  before going through the screening process. This helps avoid any awkward beeping or unnecessary interrogation. Most of the time, they let me through with a smile once they know.

If customs inspect my wigs, I simply state that they are synthetic and not made of human hair. This usually lightens the mood, and they promptly hand them back, wishing me a pleasant journey. It’s a relief to leave any drama behind and continue my travels with my wigs.

Dealing with Adverse Weather

When traveling to places with unique weather conditions, it’s important to adjust my wigs accordingly. In rainy climates, I secure ponytails and updos with extra pins and spritz on gripper spray to prevent them from loosening due to moisture.

In dry desert air, I comb out my large knotless braids wig nightly to prevent tangling and add leave-in conditioner to hydrate the synthetic fibers. In humid tropical climates, I wash my wigs more often and use texturizing mousse to add volume to limp curls.

With a bit of preparation and the right products, my wigs can withstand whatever the elements throw at them during my travels.

Repairing Damage on the Go

While I take precautions, wear and tear on wigs can happen during a trip. For fixable issues like loose knots or unraveling braids, I carry wig tape, synthetic thread, and small scissors to perform quick repairs at my hotel.

If I come across unfamiliar repairs, I search for tutorials online to guide me. With resourcefulness and the right tools, I can restore even my favorite travel wigs to their full beauty during my trip.

However, it’s important to remember that wigs are meant to be enjoyed carefreely during adventures, not to cause stress. If a repair is beyond my DIY skills on the road, I let it go and switch to a backup wig instead. There will be other trips, and other wigs.

In summary, wearing wigs while traveling requires proper preparation, flexibility, and a positive mindset. Choosing the right wig styles, having a well-stocked travel kit for quick fixes, and confidently dealing with security are crucial skills. But most importantly, remember that wigs are meant to liberate you, not confine you, while on the road. Focus on the journey ahead, not hair worries. With the right wigs and attitude, you’ll create lasting memories that go far beyond any wig’s lifespan. Bon voyage and happy travels!
