So, you’re taking the plunge and moving out of state – that’s both exciting and nerve-wracking to start a new chapter somewhere unfamiliar. Whether it’s for work, family, or just the thrill of a fresh start, moving to a new state involves a lot of logistics. Let’s break down all the steps to make your move as smooth as possible.

Plan Ahead, Like Way Ahead

It can’t be overstated how much easier your life will be if you start planning well in advance. You’re not just moving to a new home; you’re moving to an entirely new state. From figuring out your budget to what you’ll do once you get there, a well-thought-out plan is your best friend. So:

  • Budget: Calculate all potential costs, including movers, supplies, and travel expenses,
  • Research: Look into your new city, neighborhood, and state to know what you’re getting into,
  • Timeline: Create a moving timeline to track all tasks,
  • Inventory: List all your belongings to decide what stays and what goes.

Declutter and Downsize

Now’s the perfect time to take a hard look at your belongings. Do you need that futon from college or those shoes you haven’t worn in two years? Probably not. The less you have, the less you need to pack, move, and unpack. Sell, donate, or recycle items you no longer need. You’ll not only make your move easier but might even earn a little extra cash.

Get Your Supplies

You’re going to need boxes—lots of them. But don’t just grab any old box. Quality matters. The last thing you want is for a box to rip open during the move, spilling your stuff everywhere. Invest in good quality packing supplies like strong boxes, packing tape, and bubble wrap. Oh, and don’t forget markers for labeling.

Hire Professional Movers

You could DIY your move, but trust me, it’s more complex than it looks, especially for an out-of-state transition. Professional movers have the experience and resources to make your move hassle-free.

They can handle everything from carefully packing your delicate items to transporting your car. They’re especially handy if you’ve got large or valuable items. And let’s face it—moving is stressful enough without having to drive a large truck through unfamiliar states.

A full-service mover can pretty much do everything for you. And if you bundle your car transport with household moving, you can save some bucks.

Tips For the Actual Move

The day you’ve been planning for is finally here: moving day. It’s exciting and stressful at the same time, but a few key tips can help ensure things go as smoothly as possible.

Double-Check Your Boxes

Before the movers arrive, double-check all your boxes. Make sure they’re securely taped and properly labeled. Labels should not just say what’s in the box but also where it’s supposed to go in your new home—like “kitchen utensils” or “master bedroom books.” This will make the unpacking process so much more manageable.

Cancel Utilities and Set Up New Ones

By now, you should have already scheduled the cancellation of your utilities at your old place. Make sure to double-check that water, gas, electricity, and internet services are all set to be shut off the day after your move. At the same time, ensure that the utilities at your new place are ready to be activated the day you arrive.

Prepare an Essentials Bag

You won’t be able to unpack everything in one day. Prepare an essentials bag with enough clothes, toiletries, medications, and other must-haves to get you through the first few days in your new home. Include non-perishable snacks, bottled water, and a first-aid kit. This bag should be easily accessible, either in your car or marked among your packed boxes.

Document the Condition of Your Items

Before loading up, take some time to document the condition of your important or valuable items. Photos are a good way to do this. That way, if anything gets damaged during the move, you have a record for insurance purposes.

Confirm the Moving Schedule

Go over the moving day schedule with your movers one last time. Confirm when they will arrive and any other specific arrangements, like if they’re handling particularly heavy or valuable items. The more you communicate, the smoother the day will go.

Keep Personal Valuables With You

Important documents, jewelry, and other personal valuables should stay with you rather than going in the moving truck. It’s just better to keep these items in your possession to minimize the risk of loss or damage.

Be Available for Last-Minute Issues

Stay accessible in case the moving crew has questions or runs into any issues. Having your phone charged and on hand is a good way to ensure you’re reachable for any last-minute questions or emergencies.

Moving out of state is no small feat, but with detailed preparation and perhaps the help of professional services, it can go off without a hitch. And speaking of professional services—hiring a full-service moving company can help lift the burden off your shoulders, from packing to transportation, even insurance.
