Eliminating all risks when it comes to car accidents is impossible, despite how safely we drive. However, there are measures you can take to prevent such an incident from happening. You’ll want to pay attention to these six tips to reduce your chances of a road mishap. Having an experienced Gulfport car accident attorney can be a lifesaver when you do find yourself in an unwanted car crash.

Consider Road Conditions

Drivers should always be aware of prevailing weather and road conditions that could affect their vehicle’s performance and handling. Snow, fog, and rain can make it difficult to see, but you can always slow down and use your windshield wipers. In the event of night driving, you should reduce speed and put more distance between the car in front of you.

Follow the Maintenance Schedule

Ensure your car is roadworthy and safe to drive by having it checked regularly. The tires, brake system, fluid levels, and lights all play an important role. Take your vehicle to a reputable and trusted shop and have it inspected by a professional. In addition, you can learn more about your car by reading the manual and knowing where the essential components are.

Do Not Drink and Drive

Car accidents can increase if the motorist is impaired with too much alcohol. Being drunk makes you sleepy, and you may not have the reaction time to prevent crashes and other things. If you are out with your friends, choose a designated driver so you can all go home safely. If you can’t drive, then it might be better to call a cab or an Uber and have somebody drive for you.

Eliminate Distractions

Your vehicle’s dashboard should be clear of any objects that might obstruct your field of vision. At the same time, it’s not recommended that you do anything other than focus on the road. It’s easy to get distracted by your mobile phone when there’s a call coming or when you get an interesting notification. At the same time, you should not be eating when driving or getting into a heated argument with your passenger(s).

Follow Traffic Rules and Speed Limits

Traffic rules and speed limits are in place to reduce the risk of a car accident. As motorists, it’s your duty to follow these at all times, not just for yourself but for those around you. As a general rule, you should have three seconds’ worth of space in the vehicle in front of you. Generally speaking, you should always be on the defensive and anticipate road hazards and what other motorists might do.

When in Doubt, Slow Down

Last but not least, it’s better to slow down if you don’t know what will happen on the road. A person might be looking to cross, or a speeding car might beat the red light. At the same time, do not stop abruptly and risk the car behind bumping into you. Check your brakes and make sure they’re working well before going on major roads.
