HBO has rolled out the official trailer for Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, putting Larry David back at the center of a high-concept sketch show that turns American history into a series of awkward, argumentative, very Larry-sized disasters (Larry David Show).

The limited series premiered June 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max, with seven episodes scheduled to run weekly through the Aug. 7 finale. The project is billed as an original limited sketch comedy series from David and longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer, with Higher Ground also attached through executive producers Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Ethan Lewis and Vinnie Malhotra.

A historical comedy filtered through Larry David

The trailer frames the series around America’s 250th anniversary, but the premise is less patriotic pageant than comic collision. Instead of a polished tribute to the country’s past, the show imagines historical moments interrupted by David’s familiar mix of stubborn logic, social friction and escalating discomfort.

HBO’s logline sums up the joke: “Those who don’t know history… are doomed to watch Larry David repeat it.” The series features David alongside select Curb Your Enthusiasm actors and a wider group of guest stars, using major events in U.S. history as setups for sketches rather than straightforward reenactments.

Guest stars and creative team

The trailer also highlights a large comedy ensemble. Reported appearances include Isla Fisher, Jane Krakowski, Jon Hamm, Sean Hayes, Jerry Seinfeld, Rita Wilson, Susie Essman, Essence Atkins, Toby Huss, Greg Kinnear, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Vince Vaughn and Chris Parnell. Fisher and Krakowski, who both appeared in Curb Your Enthusiasm, are among the guest stars featured in the first full trailer.

David and Schaffer wrote and executive produced the series, with Schaffer also serving as director. Their reunion is a key selling point for longtime HBO comedy viewers, given their work shaping the later-era tone of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Why the trailer is getting attention

The new footage positions Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness as a larry david sketch comedy built for fans who want the friction of Curb in a faster, more episodic format. Rather than following one fictionalized version of David through modern Los Angeles, the series drops his persona into different eras and lets small breaches of etiquette spiral into chaos.

That approach gives HBO a recognizable comedy brand while leaning into the renewed demand for short-form, premise-driven sketch comedy. The trailer suggests the series will use historical settings as a springboard for familiar David themes: rules, manners, misunderstandings and the moral outrage of tiny inconveniences.

Where to watch

Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness airs on HBO and streams on HBO Max. The seven-episode limited series began its run on June 26, with new episodes released weekly and the finale scheduled for Aug. 7.
