> The gift card, a win-win product

What if the success of the gift card lies in its win-win aspect? Indeed, from the buyers’ point of view, the gift card is a product that meets several needs, namely: to give a gift, to please, to respect a budget and not to waste time. For brands and retailers, it also offers many advantages. Selling gift cards is obviously selling a gift that is popular with consumers. In this sense, they allow you to increase the turnover of your company, but it can also help you to retain your customers, reach new buyers who do not yet know your brand or diversify your clientele. With it, you could, for example, reach a B2B target, who wants to thank their customers or teams, but also defuse a conflict with a dis satisfied consumer or thank them for their loyalty by offering them a gift card.

Another advantage underestimated by merchants, the gift card is a good way to quickly bring liquidity to the company, because it is an intangible product. During the COVID-19 health crisis, the gift card even became a symbol of consumers’ support for their local merchants. The idea was simple: order now, to help traders pay their expenses, and come back to consume later.

. Design your gift card

Who says gift card, says “gift”, this is why you must pay particular attention to this product, even if it is dematerialized. Take the time to imagine the design of your card and try to transcribe the graphic universe of your shop or a particular theme (e.g. Christmas, Birthday, etc.). The visual aspect is very important and contributes greatly to the shopping experience, both for the buyer and for the user. Thus, do not forget to take care of sending your gift card, with a beautiful envelope, beautiful paper, a perfume, or even a personalized stamp. Moreover, even for an “e-card” it is advisable to provide a printable version in A4 format. It is indeed more pleasant to offer and receive a printed gift voucher than a simple e-mail. The Bonsais brand, for example, offers a gift card on its store that will be delivered in a craft envelope with the possibility of adding a personalized message to the recipient of this gift card.

. Create your first gift card

To create your first gift card, go to the administrator interface of your Shopify online store. Click on the “Products” tab then “Gift cards”. To activate the sale of gift cards, click on the “Sell gift cards” button, and create your product by filling in the following information:

Title: Give her title to your gift card. If you only want to offer one card, it can be a generic name like “Gift Card”, “Gift Voucher”. On the other hand, if you are considering themed gift cards for Christmas, birthdays, for her / him, etc. or with specific amounts, then you can indicate it here to differentiate them.

Description: Describe your gift card, specifying how it will be shipped and used. Note that gift cards do not have an expiration date by default, so they remain valid as long as there is money left on them. Do not hesitate to put this specificity forward to reassure your customers.

Multimedia support: The objective is to illustrate your product. Create an engaging visual or use a preview of the gift card your customers will receive.

Amounts (or variants): here you can define the different amounts that customers will be able to purchase. It’s important to come up with different amounts to meet your customers’ budget, but be sure to stay consistent with the average value of the items you’re selling. The goal is to allow the recipient to be able to buy something from your store, so don’t offer too small amounts. On the Bonsais brand gift card, for example, customers can choose between an amounts ranging from 50 to 300 euros.

Product availability: Here you define the sales channels, that is, the places where you want to sell your gift card. To get started, simply select “Online Store”. You can set up additional sales channels later, especially if you have physical outlets.

. Manage gift card sales

On Shopify, gift cards are by default 100% digital to ensure automated processing. Thus, no action is required on your part when selling a gift card.

An email is instantly sent, after payment validation, and your customer can print the gift card or forward the email to the person of their choice. However, to improve the customer experience, you can offer to send a gift card by mail. In this case, the sale of a gift card takes place in the same way as for your other products and you can consult your sales from the “Orders” menu and thus retrieve the invoicing and delivery information. You can view the history of gift card sales and the amount remaining on each from the “Products” menu, then “Gift cards”. This history is particularly useful if you are contacted by a customer who wants to know the balance of his card or who has lost the code.
