Top 5 Summer Road Trips in WA

Western Australia is topping the list as one of the most liveable places in the world. That’s a pretty big deal – but also kind of old news to those of us who call this place home.

Whether you’re a new arrival, or a Perthite looking to shake up on the weekend and head out for a road trip – this is an ode to some of WA’s most unique and stunning weekend getaway locations.

Here goes.

1. Margaret River

Distance from Perth: 3hrs drive

Top attractions: Wineries, caves, beaches, national parks.

With sprawling beaches and thick forests, Margaret River is one of the most stunning locations to visit during the warmer months. The short drive south takes you through some of WA’s most beautiful spots – including the Vasse wine region – not to mention the famous cow town (Cowaramup – indigenous name for purple crowned lorikeet).

Spend the morning surfing before heading into town for a well-earned lunch at some of Margaret River’s world-class eateries. With plenty of local wines and craft beers to try, you can be sure to keep the good times rolling.

If you’re keen to get to know the region on a different level, then immerse yourself in local indigenous culture and experience the world underground with around 100 caves formed over 1 million years ago.

2. Shark Bay and Monkey Mia

Distance from Perth: 9hrs drive

Top attractions: water sports, world heritage national parks, whale watching, dolphin feeding.

If you’ve got a few days off you must visit Shark Bay. Travel around 800km from Perth CBD along National Route 1 traversing WA’s stunning coastal plains. While possible to do it all at once – if you’re after a more laidback approach it’s worth booking accommodation somewhere along the way to break up the drive.

With stunning red sands meeting crystal clear waters, there are few places in WA with such picturesque scenes. Whether you’re there for the countless water activities from snorkelling, fishing, dolphin feeding, or discovering old fishing villages in the area, or you’re keen to get your wheels dirty off-road in the Francois Peron National Park with some of WA’s most unique landscapes.

There are multiple villas up for grabs, as well as Airbnbs, and camping spots for couples, groups and families. For those on a budget, or chasing an authentic outdoor living experience, there is plenty of low-cost accommodation available where you can pitch a tent for the night.

For a long drive you’ll probably be after a large, roomy SUV that can fit the whole family comfortably – something like the Skoda Kodiaq.

3. Manjimup

Distance from Perth: 3.5hrs drive

Top attractions: Local wineries, black truffles, four aces park, Fonty’s pool, mountain biking.

Explore WA’s stunning southwest region at its best – Manjimup is one of WA’s better kept secrets. With an array of local wineries producing world-class pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and merlot, be sure to savour the region’s best with a wine tasting or two, or three.

Jump on your mountain bike and follow the Deanmill Heritage Trail or the Munda Biddi Trail for a world-class off-road biking experience. Why not bring some local cheeses and wines for a picnic on the way?

This region is also filled to the brim with local farms offering produce at their front gate (especially during the autumn months) so be sure to stop by and drop some dollars in the tin in return for some delicious local goodies.

4. Walpole – Denmark

Distance from Perth: 5hrs drive

Top attractions: Hiking, whale watching, fishing, diving, local distilleries, eateries.

The epitome of WA’s south-west region is of course the coastal towns of Denmark and Walpole. Located a solid 5-hour drive south, these towns are bursting with life and welcome travellers with a host of activities ranging from beach hopping to sandalwood smelling, cider tasting and treetop walking.

Walpole’s inlet is home to some of the most relaxed camping spots in WA – with plenty of activities nearby including fishing, mountain biking, canoeing, and tree-top walking. There are also plenty of chalets nearby and excellent hiking locations for those wanting to immerse themselves in nature.

Summer calls for crisp ciders and, of course, ice cream. Drive half an hour towards Denmark to bite into one of the tastiest burgers around at the Denmark Good Food Factory or sample some of the most luxurious ice creams at Bartholomews Meadery. Seriously, you won’t regret it.

5. Esperance

Aerial view of Lake Hillier, Middle Island near Esperance

Distance from Perth: 7.5hrs drive

Top attractions: Fishing, hiking, swimming, snorkelling, diving, indigenous culture, sandboarding.

Squeaky white sand, turquoise waters and a world of nature waits for anyone willing to venture as far south as Esperance. After a long drive, you’re going to want to dive into the clear waters of Blue Haven Beach and Twilight Cove or stretch your legs on 11 Mile beach. Trust us, beaches don’t get any better than this. If you’re partial to a gamble and good fish, try your luck at one of Esperance’s prime fishing locations such as Salmon Beach.

If you’ve had enough of the land – why not charter a boat for the day and head out diving or fishing where the fish are bigger and better?

If you’re interested in learning more about the local area and indigenous culture, Esperance is the place to get closer to the local stories that shaped the region.
